Special Education

The Yazoo City  School District collaborates with the Mississippi Department of Education in a vital statewide initiative aimed towards identifying, locating, and evaluating children from birth to age 21 who may experience developmental delays, health impairments, or physical, mental, communicative, and emotional disabilities.

We understand that early identification of these children’s needs is essential for their educational success and overall development. We urge parents, service agencies, preschool teachers, physicians, and any concerned individuals to refer children to the Child Find Coordinator in their local school district. Upon receiving a Child Find Referral, the Child Find Coordinator will proactively implement the Mississippi Referral-to-Placement process, ensuring that every child receives a thorough evaluation to determine their eligibility for crucial support services.

Before evaluation begins, we provide parents with written notification that outlines the process, as well as an explanation of procedural safeguards and their rights. Once informed consent is obtained, a comprehensive and nondiscriminatory evaluation will be conducted across all areas relevant to the suspected disability. If a child is found eligible for special education services, parents will be promptly notified, and a tailored Individualized Education Program (IEP) will be developed to meet the child's specific needs. It is imperative for parents to sign the consent for placement, as this is necessary for their child to receive specialized services.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) recognizes the following categories of disabilities:

  •  Autism

  •  Deaf-Blindness

  •  Developmental Delay

  •  Emotional Disability

  •  Hearing Impairment

  •  Language or Speech Impairment

  •  Intellectual Disability

  •  Multiple Disabilities

  •  Orthopedic Impairment

  •  Other Health Impairment

  •  Specific Learning Disability

  •  Traumatic Brain Injury

  •   Visual Impairment

Together, we will ensure that every child has access to the support and resources needed to excel in their educational journey. Your involvement in this process is invaluable, and we are committed to guiding you every step of the way.
